SUBAQUEOUS FLOWER SHOW - Artist Statement
Underneath a shallow drift, flowers perform on a spot lit stage. Between hallow layers of surface and undersurface, a theatre inhabits an arid pocket of light, where exotic flowers of the surface-world grow on unfamiliar vines, engulfing the motionless marble and plaster figures that prop the gradual drama. Close to the surface, the vines transform into marine vegetation, grasping for oxygen from the thin layer of water floating above. Beneath the stage, floating back and forth with the tide, the audience sits: tourists and natives of the world above. Some stay for the show, others less lively are fixtures of the depths, die-hard devotees, great patrons of the arts. by Paul Spensive
Spencer is currently working to create a body of work over the next two years exploring the purview of theatrical performance and stage design in painting.
As a son of two stage actors, Spencer spent a deal of his childhood backstage or watching my family and family-friends perform from the sidelines. “Revelations of a Theater Brat” is a visual/dream testimonial of childhood experiences as a small observer in an audience of paying adults.
